Entering the tall atrium of the Okura Prestige in Bangkok will likely evoke a slight sense of confusion. With its kimono-clad staff and subdued Japanese design it looks and feels like you’ve just dropped big bucks on a posh stay in the heart of Tokyo, but you’re actually positioned at a plum location on Bangkok’s embassy row.
Covering the top floors of the Park Venture Ecoplex building (which is directly connected to Central Embassy and the Phloen Chit BTS station) the Okura Prestige manages to create an atmosphere that hints to “Lost in Translation” with a generous dose of flawless Thai hospitality. The facilities are just as on-point, topped off with a state-of-the-art infinity pool hovering high above the clamours streets below.
Rooms are smart, impeccably clean (unsurprising, considering the Japanese standard) and done up in a palette of soft natural colours and white. Floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample daylight and provide fantastic views of the city, while the open-plan layouts give even the entry-level rooms a spacious impression. No gimmicks here, but a focus on elegance and functionality, including thoughtful touches like TOTO toilets, a Japanese tea set, and complimentary pyjamas waiting upon your arrival. Breakfast is served in not one, but two different restaurants and is one of the best we’ve ever had at a Bangkok hotel. The lobby lounge transforms in a food bonanza featuring everything from made-to-order eggs benedict (highly recommended) to freshly-made French toast and a seriously impressive breakfast buffet (cheeses, fresh juices, pastries, soups, you name it, they have it). If Japanese fare has your preference (or if you want to escape the breakfast crowds), opt for breakfast at Yamazato, the Japanese restaurant on the opposite side of the lobby, where they serve fabulous set menus that aren’t just a joy for tastebuds, but for the eyes as well.
Even if you’re not spending the night, the hotel is worth a visit. Stop by for Sakura afternoon tea in the Up and Above lobby lounge – featuring gourmet teas by Mariage Frères and expertly crafted nibbles. Its theme changes with the seasons, so check Okura’s Facebook page for current specials. Sushi lovers will be able to feast to their heart’s content at Yamazato, which focuses on ‘Japanese haute cuisine’. One floor up, the Michelin-starred ELEMENTS will entice those curious to explore a Japanese take on French cuisine.
Tips
- Double check if your room rate includes breakfast. If it isn’t, consider paying extra for it, as the additional charge is more than justified.
- All rooms are located on high floors, so fabulous views are guaranteed. For something truly spectacular, opt for a corner suite.
- The pool is somewhat of an Instagram hotspot. Come early to nab a lounge chair.
