As big fans of the Hoshinoya brand (also known as the ‘Aman of Japan’ – go figure!), we were thrilled to find out the group was opening a resort in the tiny hot spring enclave of Guguan in Taiwan’s mountainous heartland. Predictably, they brought along a heavy dose of Japanese finesse, but managed to seamlessly weave in Taiwanese elements to retain a strong sense of place.

Tips
- While technically located in Taichung, don’t underestimate the distance from the city – it’s still a (scenic) 1.5 hour drive away.
- Make the most of your time in the forest by participating in the complimentary tea-tasting sessions and exercise programmes.
- While the hotel is very kid-friendly when it comes to amenities (there’s a special area in the pool, as well as a fantastic kids menu), the two-level rooms with open stairs can pose a danger. Opt for a single-level room to play it safe.
